Episode Summary

Bushrat started hashing as a U.S. Marine on Okinawa in 1989. A motor-transport unit carried participants by bus to remote A-to-B jungle trails, leaving little option but to finish; the physical challenge and camaraderie captivated him immediately. He soon joined Okinawa’s larger hash and formed a long hared partnership with Yepper, ultimately accumulating four-digit trail experience.

Hashing also transformed him into a serious runner, leading from his first difficult Marine Corps Marathon to a 3:03 personal best and extensive road racing. He discusses hundreds of trails, Appalachian terrain, travel across the United States and abroad, television coverage, memorable beer checks, and his preference for direct, difficult trail over excessive ceremony. Now in Pennsylvania, he remains an active hare and advocate for the craft of designing an adventurous route.
