Episode Summary
Tooth Fairy was a Division I runner and career Navy officer when a fellow runner invited him to Samurai H3 in Japan in 1993. His first night trail through Yokohama combined competitive running, beer and a welcoming mix of Japanese and expatriate hashers. He returned the following week, partied across Tokyo and knew he had found an ideal community. His job as administrator of a Navy dental command produced the comparatively clean name “Tooth Fairy.”
His 30-year naval career took him through Samurai, San Antonio and the many Washington, D.C., kennels. He became a GM and RA, served on White House, Full Moon and Red Dress mismanagement and helped create demanding trails such as Japan’s Ho Chi Minh Trail. Tooth Fairy recalls subway-related flour scares, DC’s “Black Monday,” elaborate beer miles and meeting his wife, Slurpee, through hashing. He also reflects on leadership, clever naming, military-style organization, changing communications and enjoying a new phase of retirement and travel hashing.
