Episode Summary

Sister Michael tried one hash in Lusaka, Zambia, in 1985, but truly joined the community in Oslo in 1991 under GM Wolfgang Wurst. Oslo’s strong circles, singing, and international membership suited a life already shaped by theater, music, development work, and overseas postings. His career later took him through Ethiopia, Israel, Africa, Europe, and the U.S. diplomatic world.

He discusses helping clubs and continental gatherings, memorable Interhash performances, leading songs and circles, and the personal connections formed across decades of travel. Away from hashing, he recounts work with the African National Congress and his current project rescuing and restoring a Wurlitzer organ. The conversation brings together history, performance, public service, and the recurring characters who made the hash a constant across an unusually varied life.
