Episode Summary

MuthaTucka first encountered hashing as a student in New Zealand, although a cold, rainy suburban trail with wine and snacks did not immediately win him over. He returned to hashing in Wellington around 1988, joining Capital H3 and other local kennels before setting off on an extraordinary period of international travel following the 1992 Interhash in Thailand.

Carrying little more than a backpack, a hash directory and a few thousand dollars, MuthaTucka travelled through Hong Kong and then spent roughly 18 months moving across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. He used hashes as points on his route, saved money by drinking only when he found a kennel and communicated by postcards long before widespread email. He recalls being “kidnapped” by hashers for unexpected weekends, finding isolated clubs through embassies and discovering that the real magic often lived in smaller local kennels rather than major events. The conversation continues through later travels, numerous countries and clubs, song traditions and even hashing connected with Antarctic assignments.
