Episode Summary

Danny Dutch offers a rare childhood view of Jakarta hashing in the 1980s. As the son of a Foreign Service family, he joined his father and brother on trails during school holidays, remembering three-legged routes, tropical terrain, beer-soaked expatriate gatherings, yearbooks, and a community large enough to host an Interhash.

He also recalls how quickly Indonesia’s landscape could change, including a trail area erased by deforestation. Although he did not become a lifelong weekly hasher, his memories preserve the atmosphere, people, and customs of a celebrated period in Jakarta’s history—and show how hashing looked to a young participant growing up inside an international diplomatic community.
