Episode Summary

P-Head attended Dayton’s third hash in July 1987 after seeing founder Little Tudor Jumper wearing unusual hash clothing at local road races. Initially attracted more to the deliberately deceptive trail than to the social side, he soon began producing Dayton’s printed Hash Trash and became increasingly involved in keeping the young kennel functioning. When participation declined and the founder moved away, the regulars put P-Head in charge.

He remained Dayton’s GM for eight and a half years and was subsequently appointed “Tyrant for Life,” giving him permanent permission to offer opinions whether mismanagement asks for them or not. P-Head recalls the practical realities of running a kennel before email and websites, including printed directions, changing run days, beer logistics and early naming traditions. He also discusses Dayton’s longevity, memorable trails and trips, participation in RAGBRAI and the friendships built over more than 1,200 Dayton hashes. His account is an inside history of how consistent leadership helped a small Midwestern kennel survive for decades.
